I'm not clear on how backlash compensation could help with skew, but I'm glad it helped. In my case, the original problem went away, so it seems it was manufacturing gunk. Main issue now is that the wheels are dust magnets (static, I guess), so I have to use the magic of q-tips periodically to clean...

Ok, I vote for manufacturing gunk. Have cleaned both the tracks and the groove in the wheels and will keep an eye and report on the situation if it recurs.
